I really loved concepting and constructing this piece. I did not initially know what kind of composite creature I wanted Flybaby to be, only that I wanted it to be half human, half decomposer. Originally, it was going to be an amoeba or a butterfly. However, once I took the concept to my peers, they suggested using a more 'gross' insect. So, I landed on a fly. I wanted Flybaby to be cute, but also unsettling. He's different than other babies, but he's not bad.
I constructed him using armature wire, onto which I sculpted his hard bits (arms and face), then wrapped in fill, and sewed his fluffy abdomen directly onto. After that, I added special details like his beadwire hairs, tufts of fur, diaper, and wings (made out of a takeout container). Flybaby is obviously not for everyone. He usually incites a very strong reaction from people, and not always a positive one. I just want people who like Flybaby to like him for his buggyness, not despite it.
