I like to transform concepts into characters in my sculptures. Kyle the Kaiju conveys that big scary monsters are sometimes cuddly and clumsy friends.
Kyle is pretty small, but he is expected to someday attack a major city, as most Kaijus do. Unfortunately, Kyle is not keen on attacking cities and he’s overwhelmed by others' expectations of him. I used freeform crochet to make Kyle’s body and then sculpted his hands, feet, and face out of air dry clay. I wanted Kyle to feel cute, but also nervous and clumsy—thus, I gave him a facial grimace and disproportionately stubby legs for his big clawed feet.
