Ben Franz is a multidisciplinary artist and creative based in New York City. He especially focuses on mixed-media sculpture and creature fabrication.
Now more than ever, I believe it is essential for youth like me to stay committed to handmade art and craft. When making art, I think about visual and mechanical aspects while also maintaining the character of the piece.
I am really inspired by fantastical imagery, and grew up consuming a lot of popular fantasy and science fiction media, which has a heavy influence on my practice. I particularly like to explore the emotional connection that I feel with decomposers like bugs and fungi. I suppose I empathize with them because they are so different from humans, and yet they are vital to the human life cycle. I admire how small creatures are able to break down dead matter manually. Honestly I wish that humanity had a little more respect and appreciation for little creatures. I often create personified insects in order to better allow others to connect with them, and hopefully be less afraid of otherness.
