48 is a typographical piece of vinyl paint on a vinyl fiber American flag. I hung the flag upside down, because the U.S. flag code specifically says that the flag is not to be inverted “except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.” Right now, thousands of Americans have lost their autonomy over their bodies and their right to medical care. I thought that this would be appropriate.
The “48” itself has a few meanings: First, the 48 anti-trans bills successfully passed in 2024. Secondly, it symbolizes H.R.4864 - End Birthright Citizenship Fraud Act of 2023, the proposed bill that would prevent birth naturalization and would completely slander the idea of U.S. freedom and social liberty. Finally, H8, or Hate (the word reveals itself when the backlight is off), reflects hate that our American government has extended to all the most vulnerable minorities through executive orders, legislation, and judicial decisions.
